We who are about to die salute you.

Bloody Romans and their bloody classist attitudes. My attitude to the Romans: pee'd off! How many times can you say gladiators were despised because they were scummier than prostitutes and actors, yet were adored because they survived after fighting for their lives? A 300 words essay on gladiators I could handle, but a 900 words essay? Nah, having trouble I am!

Well Ally, just back from the tutorial and there have been some conflicting views.Seems quite a hierachy between gladiators and of course the dopey girls with nothing better to do see them as sex symbols.Appears they were seen as the bad boy Grant Mitchells of their time.Don't quite get that bit,ho hum looking forward to the day school at Manchester Met.

I can see that, the Grant Mitchell thing. Think about it. They all look like bulldogs licking piss off a nettle, but because they are of the "come and 'ave a go 'cos you think you're 'ard enough" ilk, the women all swoon. Well, the dopey women anyway! (It's just like some girl idolising Ricky Hatton or Joe Calzaghe as a sex symbol nowadays.) I know I read somewhere that 'gladius' was also a word the Romans used for men's waggly bits, giving a greater emphasis to the sex symbol thing.
I can understand the heirarchy, as the older glads who had survived the greater number of combats would demand a higher price for their lanistas, and if the glad was to die then the person presenting the show would have to pay a high price in 'insurance'.
